July Green Initiatives

Hi world! Chris here. It’s August now which means it’s officially time to round up all the new sustainable challenges I accomplished last month and share them here to inform and inspire! Hope you enjoy 🙂

Week #1

This is a big green trend that a lot of people talk about. However, it’s also one that’s really easy to forget about. I have a few tote bags that I got specifically to stop from using plastic shopping bags, but I never seem have them on me when I buy things.

Because of this particular challenge, I started carrying one around in my Kavu bag so that it was right there when I went to grab my wallet and I couldn’t miss it.

Love this cat tote. I got it from EarthBound last year and it’s great for carrying the snacks I was buying in this picture!

Week #2

This is something I try to do anyways, but usually instead of actually taking the time to make anything I just end up hoarding plastic containers because I don’t know what to do with them. Well, this month, thanks to this challenge, I decided to try and change that.

This is an ordinary Voss water bottle that was purchased because someone forgot their water while shopping and got really thirsty. After it was empty, I felt like this clean, tall shape would make a pretty good vase, so I got to work with the items pictured below.

The gold paint was actually something I got to use for wedding decorations, so I wanted to use it on the vase to test it out and see how it holds up.

Well, I’m super glad I did because this paint is very, very, very thin. It took so many coats to actually start making a difference on the bottle. You can watch the struggle below.

First coat! I expected it to be light so no big deal.
Third coat and it somehow looks thinner.
Fifth coat went on a few days later and it’s still pretty see-through. Ignore my fiancé’s knees in the background. He was playing with that Pokémon toy on the table.
Seventh coat and no luck yet.

This was all happening over the span of a few days. And yes, I was waiting for each coat to dry before painting more. Something about that paint is just super thin. It probably would have worked better if I poured it into the bottle and painted the inside, but I didn’t think of that so I had to keep trucking along. Luckily, I finally hit about the tenth or so coat and it finally started to work!

From there it didn’t take long to reach the final outcome.

I had plans to cut off the top part where the lid used to screw on, but in the end I left it because I think I might tie some ribbon around it. I just didn’t have any handy when yet when I took this.

Week #3

This is definitely something I want to be able to do and really need to work on. My grandmother used to sew a lot, so I would love to keep that tradition going. However, I didn’t have anything to fix on this month so, all I could really do was file it away for something to work on later.

Week #4

I thought it was kind of funny I drew this challenge right after my post about HelloFresh because those two things really go hand in hand. So, if you want to know more about that, check out last week’s post right here.

If you’ve made it this far down, thanks for reading! Maybe leave a like before you go or tell me what you thought about the post. I’ll talk to you next week. Until then, stay safe out there!
