I Tried the US 21 Road Market

Hi world! Chris here. Sorry for the recent delay in posts but this month has been kinda crazy. Took me awhile to find a good time to sit down and put this post together. Which FYI, this is a post I’m pretty excited about because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

For anyone that doesn’t know, the US 21 Road Market is this huge event that takes place at the end of July every year. On the official website, it is described as a “cooperative endeavor in which residents, shopkeepers, restaurants and merchants host hundreds of yard sales, side walk sales, flea markets and community events.”

Spanning from Wytheville, Virginia to Harmony, North Carolina, the US 21 Road Market is basically about 100 miles of yard sales.

On the base level, that may not sound super interesting, but to someone that is about to be moving out in a few months and needs cheap furniture to furnish their future abode, it’s pretty exciting. So on the second day of the market, my fiancé and I borrowed my parents big ol’ van and set out to find some cool stuff.

Bless him for driving because while these yard sales are going on, the roads are insane. There’s people walkin’ everywhere and cars parked half in the way. It’s hectic, but you can also tell everyone is really into it.

For the most part, the road market consists of little personalized yard sales set up in front of people’s houses. However, sometimes big churches or community centers will be filled with different booths where people can wander around and end up looking something like this.

We actually found the most furniture at these kinds of stops, but they tended to be a bit more expensive for some reason. Especially considering this was the second day of the market and most people were willing to cut a deal.

There were also some indoor sales we found that were based inside community centers. Considering how hot it was outside, those were really nice to stop at.

I’m not sure how many times we stopped that day, but we drove around for quite a bit just trying to check out if anyone had furniture sitting outside. Sadly, we didn’t end up finding too much of what we were looking for, but that’s honestly part of the fun of shopping secondhand. You really never know what you’re going to get.!

In the end, we only managed to bring home two of the things we were looking for, but we found some other cool things too!

These two chairs were marked at $5 each, but I got them both for that much! I think they’ll work great after I sand them down and repaint them a nice color.

These glass cups came from a woman that used to work at a wedding rental company. She was selling out so I managed to buy this whole box for $5. For someone that’s planning a wedding, it was a total steal!

This Art Deco bowl was too eye catching to leave behind. I think it will work as an awesome catch-all bowl for keys and other doodads by the front door. I can’t actually remember if it was $4 or $6, but either way, it still wasn’t very much.

Even if I’d found nothing all day, I still think it would have been fun to drive around all the little towns and see what everyone had put together. There were some booths with collector items and some were filled with handcrafted art. It’s stuff you never find anywhere else and makes the experience extra worth it.
