What’s the Deal with HelloFresh?

Hi world! Chris here. Back from a long absence full of writing and wedding planning. And cooking actually. In preparation for this very post.

If you’ve been on YouTube at all, you’ve probably heard about HelloFresh. It’s a super common sponsor for lots of popular YouTubers and every time they work together, they make it look SO GOOD. As a big fan of food myself, I had to try it.

For anyone that doesn’t know, HelloFresh is a food subscription that sends fresh ingredients and recipes to your door at the frequency that you desire. The company is carbon neutral and is supposed to use local and sustainably sourced produce.

Based on that alone, this sounds like a great deal. It’s good for you. It’s good for the environment. What could possibly be wrong with such a subscription?

Well that’s exactly what I wanted to find out. I never like to take things at face value and just believe whatever is posted online and promoted by people who are being paid to do so. So, after finding out about the summer deal HelloFresh was offering to new subscriptions, I decided to sign up and see if it was really worth it or not.

When you sign up for HelloFresh, you’ll have your meals delivered in a box like the one above. Mine came every week with two recipes rationed out to feed two people.

Upon opening the box, you find the recipes and lists of ingredients included, as well as some little extras HelloFresh decided to throw in. Usually they come in a little green envelope like the one below.

I got vouchers to try nakedwines and codes to use for a discount at caraway.com. Haven’t tried either one, but it’s pretty cool that it was included.

As shown above, the box itself is actually insulated to keep the food cool and it comes with these ice packs that you can reuse or recycle based on the instructions on the packaging. Each meal comes in its own brown paper bag with the meat in a separate airtight container so it can be frozen until you’re ready to cook.

Everything is labeled so that you know which recipe card goes with which bag. Then inside the bag, all the ingredients are labeled too, so it makes it super easy to start cooking. I don’t love how much extra plastic waste this creates, but I guess I don’t really see what else they could do for it either.

I got my fiancé to help me make all the meals so that I had an extra opinion on how good the food was. Plus he’s a very cute cook.

Above is the sesame soy pork bowls which I think are my favorite recipe we made. Which is saying something because all of the meals were actually really delicious. None of them were super difficult to make. We never got food poisoning from any bad ingredients. Altogether it was really fun having this opportunity to cook together and try new foods!

There was one instance when HelloFresh actually left out one of the ingredients I needed. The recipe was for two sandwiches, but the box only contained one mini baguette. It was even listed on the recipe card that it was supposed to have two, but we only received the one which was kind of disappointing. However, that was only problem.

Overall, using HelloFresh was super successful and I would recommend it to anyone that’s interested. They actually sent me like thirty cards that have codes for a free meal, so hit me up if you want one. Otherwise you can visit their website here.

If you made it this far down, thank you for reading! I hope you found something useful here. If not, sorry. Maybe next week’s post will be better. Until then, stay safe out there!
