Britt’s Donuts at Carolina Beach

Hi world! Chris here. Hurricane Dorian is officially over for Wilmington, so all of us students at UNCW are back at it. Classes have resumed, work has restarted, and I’m already busy. But this time, I’m happy about it.

Thank you to everyone that kept my second home in your thoughts and your prayers during the storm. God heard everything we asked! Unfortunately, not every place that got hit was as lucky as Wilmington which means we just gotta keep asking for the safety and recovery of the people living there. They have a long road ahead of them and if physically going to help them isn’t an option, sending them a prayer is the best response.

In the meantime, I wanna talk about one of the reasons people remain in Wilmington year after year and hurricane after hurricane. It’s only about thirty minutes outside of the campus and usually costs less than $10 depending on how many you buy. It’s a summer essential and it goes by Britt’s Donuts.

I like it so much I basically post the same picture every time I go.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, first of all, I’m so sorry, and second of all, you should. Britt’s Donuts is a locally owned donut shop on the Carolina Beach boardwalk. It’s a super small building with very short hours, but it’s my favorite way to cure my sweet tooth.

Britts only makes one type of doughnut, but that’s honestly all they need. If they tried to make all the specialty doughnuts from Krispy Kreme or Dunkin, they would very quickly become just another doughnut shop. However, Britt’s choice to devote themselves to the classic glaze helps them stand apart from chain stores that always have to try too hard to stay ahead.

Being able to sit on the beach or the boardwalk and eat a freshly made doughnut honestly sells itself. In fact, for most people it’s become a tradition. And I’m always glad to participate with them.

Since it’s opening in 1939, Britt’s Donuts has been featured in multiple magazines and news articles. My mom’s a big fan of Our State magazine and Our State is a big fan of Britt’s Donuts. According to them, Britts is an iconic North Carolina vacation stop.

It’s also the focus point of a book by Daniel Ray Norris and Halyn Prusa. The book is called Forever Sweet and it looks at the history surrounding the doughnut shop and Carolina Beach.

Living by UNCW, it’s not hard to see how one local shop has gained so much attention.

It’s even made its way into the activities and events for campus clubs. My own campus ministry makes a point to go at the start of every school year so that the students can get to know each other in an environment that’s a lot more fun than a classroom. And of course, it’s also a better environment for Instagram pictures.

Clearly, the doughnuts aren’t just for food. They’re also the perfect props for pictures. And hopefully they help distract anyone from noticing how pale I am compared to Tay. Or, to be more honest, compared to anyone.

The night we turned up at Britt’s Donuts was the same night the Carolina Beach fire department was planning on letting off fireworks over the beach. I didn’t know this when I went, so it was a nice surprise to find out considering the last fireworks I had seen (aka: the ones from Facing Changes) were a little . . . little.

Carolina Beach, on the other hand, really went all out.

Of course, even without the fireworks, it would’ve been a good night. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad trip to Britt’s Donuts. Or with my ministry group. Sweet friends and sweet food are just meant to go together.

If you get the chance, take a trip to Carolina Beach and make a stop at Britt’s Donuts. I promise you won’t regret the choice if you make it.

Until then, stay sweet out there.

P.S. I just wanted to say a special thank you for all the feedback last week’s post got! It was really fun getting to hear from different people. You’re always more than welcome to reach out with a comment or message on my social media. I love it.

P.P.S. There’s a reoccurring question about my name, so I’ll just explain that now. My full name is Christy, but Chris is a nickname my family uses sometimes. I wasn’t sure how much I was going to personally publicize this blog when I started it, so I used Chris instead of Christy because it was close to my name, but it wasn’t actually my name. Now I just don’t feel like changing it. I’ll answer to Chris or Christy, so call me what you want.
