Hi world! Chris here. I made it through my 10 hour Black Friday shift just to be here writing for you all today. There were several times that I wanted to give up, but I knew I had to make it through for my Monday deadline. It was the only thing that kept me going as I fought through snail-paced computers, mountains of fuzzy jackets, and grumpy people. I even got yelled at because I wasn’t allowed to give out more than one special bag per transaction. But, I survived. Just for this post. So you better enjoy it.
In all seriousness, Black Friday wasn’t that bad. It exhausted me, but that’s kind of what work is supposed to do, so it’s fine. The day before definitely made up for it anyways.
Thanksgiving was truly incredible this year. I’ve basically been living off of quick, microwave meals and fast food at college, so it was Heaven getting to eat real, home-cooked food for the whole day. I also got to see my oldest sister (Erin) and her husband (Kyle) because they drove up from Alabama so that instantly made the holiday better. With their help, we even got to face-time Jacob while he’s overseas. It was almost like the whole family was together for once and that doesn’t get to happen very often. It made for a really special time.
I hope you all also had a lovely Thanksgiving with lots of family, friends, and more importantly, food.
I’m gonna change the topic now and dive into the content for this post. I wanna take a turn from the usual narrative/prose writing that I use here and share some of my more creative writings (AKA: my poetry).
These are three poems that I thought were fitting for the holiday season because it’s supposed to be a time of sharing and being with family and these poems are all about family. Plus, they made for good gifts!
Yeah, if you’re broke like me but you still want to get people presents, try writing them something. It’s unexpected and it actually takes time and effort so even if it sucks, they’ll probably appreciate that you tried and like it anyways. At least, that’s what I’m assuming happened with these poems here.
Hopefully, they can work their magic again and help you enjoy what’s coming next!
Old Man
You call me princess as if it's my name.
I've heard it from others,
But it wasn't the same.
Their words were pretty, meaningless things.
It was your words that taught me
I'm the daughter of The King.
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Have found-in you-the perfect host.
And Mother's found her perfect man
With caring, strong, and outstretched hands.
You lead this family under God,
And set wrongs right with just a nod.
I don't think we're lucky.
I think we are blessed.
Because when it comes to fathers,
We have the best.
Even if your hair is graying,
You know I'm joking when I'm saying
Your bald spot is getting worse,
But at least you're not yet in a hearse.
Right now, you're still our old man
So, here's Happy Birthday from your biggest fan.

Mamma Bird
In a tree
In the woods
Where nobody goes
Lives a bird
In a nest
With the children she grows.
Four eggs she had laid
And four chicks they became.
Three girls and a boy,
Not a single one the same.
The first chick was smart
And grew up too fast.
The second chick it seemed
Wanted to grow up last.
The third chick was brave
Like a soldier or cop.
And the fourth chick had dreams
That nobody could stop.
But this story's not for them or the plans that they had.
This story's for their mother and a little for their dad.
The mother who loved them no matter their mess
Who picked every twig to craft them a nest.
She fed them by day and she fed them by night.
She told them 'I love you' then held them too tight.
She brushed out their wings and cleaned every feather
And kissed them and helped them through all kinds of weather.
Their lives were more happy than they were sad
And they owed it to their mother and a little to their dad.
But baby birds can't stay babies forever
So each little chick grew out grownup feathers.
And the mother they loved taught them each how to fly
Until they found their new home in the great, wide sky.
But the mother wasn't sad
Because she still had dad
In a tree
In the woods
Where her children now go
Lives a bird
In a nest
Who's more loved than she knows.

Dear Erin, Jacob, and Rae
We're wandering in a snow-white wardrobe
We made from pages of a book
That's now too old to mention as we all
From time have took.
Each snowy flake of magic hangs upon the frosted air
And we try to breathe them in again
And catch each memory fair.
The golden crowns we thought we wore
Have fallen from their home
And hide within the games we played
When we sat upon a throne.
Kings and Queens of old we lived as once upon a time,
But time has robbed us of our youth
And left us less divine.
We were brothers and we were sisters,
But now we're miles apart.
You were each my faithful keeper,
'Til life made us depart.
In my imagination we're all still rulers of this land,
And in my dreams we live here
Still playing hand in hand.
We're wandering in a snow-white wardrobe
That's brought us a new day
That we can spend as kids again
Dear Jacob, Erin, and Rae.

I know some of these contain personal jokes and phrases, but the themes were things I would assume are more universal. I hope that made them somewhat fun for you all to read.
Thanks for making it this far in the post! I hope that means you’re going to leave a like and if you’re new, maybe hit that follow button as well. That’s also a great gift. It would mean more to me than if you wrote me something. Unless that something is a comment. In that case, go right ahead.
If you do or if you don’t, I’m still super glad you stopped by. Hopefully, you’ll come back because it’s the end of the semester and I’m planning on updating every week again just for this month! *Insert cheers here!* I’m super excited to go back home for Christmas and I hope you are all feeling just as happy as I am about the upcoming holiday. Fingers crossed I can come up with some properly themed posts for it. If not, please read them anyways.
Until then, stay safe out there!

As always, this is totally awesome! I love your poems and blog!

Beautiful poetry! I enjoy your blog posts. I am always reminded of the little redhead that my daughter loved so much & shared a series of books about magical cats with. Miss you Chris! I’m going to bring Sydni & her little James to Wilmington to visit you sometime! Merry Christmas!
