First Flight Fiasco

Hi world! Chris here. And I’ve got a little story to share. Now, I’m not sure how many of you have watched the show Supernatural, but it’s about two brothers that fight monsters and demons all across America. In the first season, there’s an episode with a demon that crashes planes after they’ve been in the air for twenty minutes. I don’t know why, but that’s what it does.

At the beginning of May, I was rewatching the show to get ready for the final season. I had just watched this particular episode before I went to the Greensboro airport with my parents to leave for Alaska. It was going to be my first flight ever and I had plane crashing demons on the brain. However, I was honestly way too excited about the trip to really be nervous, so it was fine.

We got to the airport two hours early like we were supposed to and made it through security with literally no line. (Side note: Security really isn’t as bad as everyone makes it seem. I’ll admit that Greensboro is a very VERY small airport, but I had to go through it in bigger airports for this trip and it wasn’t bad then either. It was weird being barefoot, but not terrible.) Then we were able to find our gate was super easily because, like I said, it’s a small airport.

Well we were all prepared to wait to board with our books and laptops and talking to each other (we’re one of those weird families that actually kinda likes each other) when the airport made an announcement that our plane needed maintenance work and would be delayed. Neither of my parents were super worried because we were supposed to have a longer layover at Charlotte so we shouldn’t have missed our next flight. We just decided to carry on as normal and wait.

As we were sitting there, the airport made another announcement asking for the owners of a black Chevy Impala. If you don’t watch Supernatural then that means literally nothing to you, so I’ll just explain that the two brothers actually drive a black Chevy Impala in the show. And they drive it to every case in every episode. Including the plane crashing demon episode.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the story but I thought it was a wild coincidence and it scared my mom when I told her about it. She’s not a huge fan of flying and she didn’t want to think about crashing at all.

The time for takeoff came and went and people were starting to get really upset about the delay. My parents didn’t want to make a big deal about it, but I wanted to know what was going on, so I made my dad go talk to the workers at the gate desk. Let me just say Thank God I did, or we would have had a very different day.

As it turns out, the maintenance workers weren’t scheduled over the weekend so nothing could be done about the plane until they got to the airport and nobody knew when that would be. In fact, it was looking so bad that the workers actually told my parents we would have better luck if we just drove to Charlotte instead of waiting for the plane.

Yes. They airport told us to drive to our flight destination.

The workers moved us on a later flight out of the Charlotte airport and we packed our bags to leave. Of course, it had to be raining outside and there was roadwork that caused traffic on our way there. Both of my parents were, in a word, stressed.

Somehow, I managed to remain pretty calm and I just tried to cheer them up for most of it. I guess God knew I was on my way to find something I would love, and he didn’t want me to worry about it.

We did eventually make it to the airport and just managed to get on our flight. With all the rushing and panic, I didn’t have time to be scared to fly. Instead, I was concerned about sitting alone with two strangers because apparently you don’t get to pick your seats on planes (I don’t understand this logic at all).

But, I guess God decided we deserved some good luck because after the doors were closed there were several empty seats on the plane and the attendants let the passengers move around if they wanted to. I actually got to sit at the window with both of my parents by me.

All the stress was gone then, and I just got to focus on the fact that I was really going to fly. And I am so grateful about that.

The experience was stunning. There are no words to describe watching the world from 1200 feet in the air as buildings turn into cars and cars turn into bugs before they all disappear in the mist of the clouds. It was thrilling to see, and it had me completely enamored.

Apparently my parents thought it was cute that I was so amazed because they sniped this picture of me. I didn’t even realize they were still there if I’m being honest. In my head I was just singing “King of the Clouds” by Panic! At The Disco. But I’m glad they enjoyed it so much. I think it made them feel better about the fiasco we had just rushed through.

In the end, we were refunded for the leg of the flight we missed so it all ended up alright. I also got a pretty crazy first flight story out of it.

Of course, overall it didn’t really bother me. I’d go through the mishap over again if I could hop on a plane right now. Even flying at night didn’t bother me. I think there’s something special about seeing the sky at midnight that makes it just as good as seeing it at noon.

I attempted to capture a city we flew over, but the camera quality through all that glass isn’t exactly stellar. But I still love looking at the lights. I can’t wait until I get the chance to do it again.

And if you ever get the chance to see the world from an airplane window, I highly suggest you take it. No matter what problems you might face, I promise it’ll be worth it.

Until then, stay safe out there!
